Paralegal, Eviction Defense – Salem Regional Office

The Salem Regional Office of Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) is seeking a paralegal to work on a new residential eviction defense program for low-income clients. The position is of limited duration and is currently funded for two years. LASO staff are currently working entirely remotely. This position will be eligible for a partial remote work option once the office reopens.  

LASO is a non-profit organization that represents low-income clients in civil cases. LASO’s eight regional offices serve the general low-income population throughout the state and two specialized statewide programs focused on services to farmworkers and on issues impacting Native Americans. LASO is an effective, high-quality legal services program that is committed to advocacy strategies having the broadest possible impact on client community problems.

The Salem Regional Office of LASO serves Marion and Polk counties.

The Paralegal will support attorneys in the Salem Regional Office and potentially other LASO regional offices, representing tenants facing eviction. The Paralegal will provide litigation support – intakes, investigative assistance, document management, for example – on a high volume of eviction defense cases. Responsibilities also include outreach to low-income tenants and communities, including building relationships with culturally-specific community-based organizations. The Paralegal will also assist clients by providing referrals to non-legal resources such as rent assistance programs.

A high degree of initiative and willingness to work collaboratively. Strong interpersonal communication skills and a positive attitude.  Experience in: preparation and filing of legal pleadings, document management, conducting case-related investigative research and use of case management software.  Demonstrated commitment to justice for low-income communities. Desire and ability to work successfully as part of a team. Willingness to work irregular hours to meet the needs of clients.

Compensation is based on a 35 hour work week. $41,000 - $65,000 depending on experience. Additional compensation for bilingual ability.  Full benefits package including individual and family health, vision and dental insurance coverage; 6% employer retirement contribution; generous paid holidays, vacation and sick leave; and paid moving expenses.
