Summer Clerkship

Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) is seeking clerks for Summer 2021.


LASO is a non-profit organization that represents low-income clients in civil cases. LASO’s eight regional offices serve the general low-income population throughout the state in civil cases. In addition, a statewide project addresses tax issues and two specialized programs focus on services to farmworkers and on issues that impact Native Americans. LASO is an effective, high-quality legal services program that is committed to advocacy strategies having the broadest possible impact on client community problems. 


Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) is seeking law clerks for summer 2021. General clerkship positions are available in Albany, Klamath Falls, Portland, and Roseburg; Farmworker Program clerkships are available in Woodburn and Hillsboro; and a Statewide Tax Clinic clerkship is available in Portland. 

Type of Legal Work 

Clerkships in the regional offices (Albany, Klamath Falls, Portland, and Roseburg) will have an emphasis on family law, housing, and/or public benefits. 

LASO’s Farmworker Program represents agricultural workers in cases that involve employment, housing, unemployment, and tax benefits problems. Law clerks will work on many aspects of client services including outreach to labor camps, legal research and writing, conducting client interviews, and drafting administrative complaints and pleadings. 

LASO’s Statewide Tax Clinic helps Oregonians in every county resolve disputes with the IRS and related Department of Revenue matters, including settling tax debt through the Offer In Compromise process; installment agreements or hardship requests; representation in tax audits and in U.S. Tax Court; help with worker classification issues; and assistance in applying for innocent or injured spouse relief. 

Qualifications and Funding 

Class standing of 1L or 2L at time of application. For all positions, bilingual capacity relevant to our client communities is preferred but not required. For Farmworker Program positions, Spanish language proficiency preferred. LASO will coordinate with fellowship programs. In addition, a limited number of paid positions are available; pay is $14/hr.

LASO will be conducting interviews remotely at the Seattle Fair on Friday, February 5, 2021 and at the Portland Fair on Saturday, February 6, 2021 and will schedule additional remote interviews, if necessary.
